Family narrative are a mechanism for children and teenagers to connect across generations in order to form their own identities. By establishing a sense of place and security in one’s family history, one can develop self-confidence and self-competence.
Bible Reading: Proverbs 14:1-35
From the first chapter of Proverbs, four key narratives have emerged: You are either,
👉🏾Wise or foolish
👉🏾Diligent or slothful
👉🏾Righteous or wicked; and
👉🏾Rich or poor.
Which one are you? Moreover,
👉🏾The children of the wicked are more likely to end up in wickedness.
👉🏾The descendants of the poor are more likely to end up very poor.
👉🏾The children of the slothful and foolish have higher tendencies ending up like their parents.
Why? You do not only inherit the looks of your parents but you also pick up their good and bad habits, attitudes, and values.
Hear the wise Solomon in Proverbs 14:12. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
That what you are doing, where you are going, the counsel you are taking, and the people you have around you seem right do not make them right. You are either right or wrong, diligent or slothful, righteous or wicked, rich or poor. There are no gray areas in these.
Naturally, you may be heading in the wrong direction by natural mentorship from parents, guardians, and family relations. But, you can consciously change it to rewrite the family narrative.
You can, and should rewrite your generational narrative consciously and deliberately.
For instance, if you do not want to be hated by people, hate poverty, change the current unhealthy practices, and pay the price for wealth.
As nobody loves a poor man – no matter how righteous they are. Proverbs 14:20. The poor is hated even of his own neighbor: but the rich hath many friends. So, get out of poverty by hating it.
How can you consciously rewrite your generational narrative?
🎯1. Consciously build your house using family narrative, do not destroy it. Proverbs 14:1. Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. Building is hard but worth all the effort.
Utilize the opportunities you have to start building the future you dream of. Pay the price. Lay the foundation and keep building. Get skills, go to school, start somewhere. And never quit.
🎯2. Consciously choose your friends and associates. Proverbs 14:7. Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge. Get out of every wrong company, relationship, and association. Consciously choose who to associate with at work, in school, church, or community.
🎯3. Consciously hate sin if you want to change your family narrative. Proverbs 14:9. Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favor. Sin sinks destiny and prosperity. Hate it and run from all appearances of evil.
🎯4. Consciously leave every way that is not right if you want to change your family narrative. Proverbs 14:12. There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. That it seems right, doesn’t make it right.
So, get up and get out. That it is the way your fathers did it does not make it right. Confirm it is right before you get into it. Be wise, be deliberate and be prudent.
🎯5. Consciously believe in yourself and your ability to change things positively if you want to change your family narrative. Proverbs 14:14. The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself. You can do it. You can make a difference. Believe it and do it.
🎯6. Consciously control your emotions and anger. Proverbs 14:17. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. Emotions like anger make people do stupid things. Be in control of your emotions.
🎯7. Consciously hate poverty so as not to be hated by others. Proverbs 14:20. The poor is hated even of his own neighbor: but the rich hath many friends. If you live your life on the receiving side, you will also receive hatred from people who should care. Do hate poverty and get out.
🎯8. Consciously work diligently for sustainable profiting. Proverbs 14:23. In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury. Make every day of your life count. Do not waste your most important resource – time.
🎯9. Consciously fear and serve God. Proverbs 14:26. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. There are so many benefits to working with God.
👉🏾Reverence Him, it is the fountain of life. Proverbs 14:27. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
🎯10. Consciously work in and serve with wisdom. Proverbs 14:35. The king’s favor is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame. At work, be wise. Deliver good work packages and you will enjoy the favor.
If your family is known for poverty, barrenness, or whatever, consciously live and work to break these generational negative narratives.
You can do it. So, do it. Prayer. Lord, help me to break all negative family narratives. Be blessed. Stay blessed. 🙏🏼 ©️The Excellent Ministry 2021
